How to assess product information

Use the details and references shown for each product to decide what to check next. Product records and guides can contain different fields, so look at what is present for the product you are considering.

Start with the details shown

Depending on the product, its record may include a description, use cases, features, pros and cons, prices, retailer links, and ratings. A recorded rating can include its value and scale, with a source or review count where provided. A guide may show only some of these fields; a missing field is simply not recorded or displayed there.

Open the recorded sources

When a product has source links, open each one and check which details it supports. A link records a reference; by itself, it does not show that every product statement has been independently tested. If a source is a seller listing, its product statements remain seller claims.

Read the status and check date

Product records can show the review status labels “Current”, “Needs review” or “Not checked”. These are the values stored for that record, not a guarantee that a product page, price or stock level is still current. The last-checked field shows the date saved in the record; when no date is saved, it appears as “Not recorded”.

Confirm buying details with the retailer

Product details and prices can change. Follow the retailer link to check the current price, stock, product information and terms before buying. The retailer is the source for its current listing and handles the transaction.
